About Fill Power (Loft)

Fill power is not the only aspect of a down duvet that determines quality, yet it is a very important factor in determining the potential total warmth of the duvet. For example, the down contained in a Queen Winter Weight Montreux duvet would take up approximately 23,625 cubic inches of space (675 loft * 35 ounces of fill). A?Lajord duvet in the same Queen?Winter Weight?actually adds up to 29,750 cubic inches (850 loft * 35 ounces of fill). Even more interesting, a Queen?Classic Weight?Lajord duvet is still 22,950 cubic inches. This means that a classic weight Lajord duvet will offer approximately equal warmth as a winter weight Montreux. Higher quality down requires less filling, resulting in a lighter duvet better suited to year-round use. Since heavier duvets are more prone to disturbing rest, the lightest duvet possible is always best.

Purchasing Advice – Summer, Classic or Winter”

After considering the basic concept of Fill Power or Loft, other important factors include room temperature, local climate and whether you tend to sleep warm or cool. Generally, warm sleepers in a warm bedroom will do better with a Summer duvet while cool sleepers in a cool bedroom will be better off with a Classic duvet. A Winter duvet is generally only recommended in lower fill powers or when the bedroom is not heated or extremely cool.

Since we can add down but cannot remove down, it is always better to start with a lighter fill weight.

Higher quality duvets will provide a wider comfort range; they will be warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer than lower quality duvets. This is because higher quality down is better at all the things that down is famous for (such as insulation, lightness, breathability, etc) than lower quality down.
